A new piercing is a small wound, and how you care for it in the first weeks and months decides whether it heals cleanly. At Modified Tattoo Gallery in Winter Park, FL, our professional piercer sends every client home with personalized aftercare guidance. Here are the fundamentals.
Clean it the right way
- Use a sterile saline solution (or the aftercare spray we recommend) two to three times a day.
- Wash your hands before touching the area — always.
- Gently rinse away any crust, then pat dry with a clean paper towel. Skip cotton balls, which can snag.
What to avoid
- Don't twist, spin, or play with the jewelry. This is the most common cause of irritation and slow healing.
- Don't use alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or harsh ointments — they damage healing tissue.
- Avoid pools, hot tubs, and lakes until healed, and keep hair products, makeup, and sleeping pressure off the piercing.
Healing takes patience
Healing times vary a lot by placement. Lobes may settle in a couple of months, while cartilage and many body piercings can take several months to a year to fully heal. Stick with your aftercare the whole time, even after it feels fine on the surface.
Downsizing and check-ins
As swelling goes down, your initial jewelry may need to be downsized to a shorter post for comfort and healing. Come see us for a jewelry change rather than doing it yourself.
Signs to watch for
Some tenderness, light swelling, and clear or whitish crust are normal early on. Reach out to us or a doctor if you notice spreading redness, heat, pus, or worsening pain.
Quality jewelry helps you heal
We use only hypoallergenic, high-quality body jewelry because the right materials make a real difference in healing. Have a question about your piercing? Visit our piercing page or check the FAQ — and you're always welcome to stop in.
