Tattoo Aftercare Guide: How to Heal a New Tattoo

Getting a great tattoo is only half the story — how you care for it during the first few weeks determines how bright, crisp, and long-lasting it stays. At Modified Tattoo Gallery in Winter Park, FL, our artists give every client personalized aftercare instructions, because the right routine depends on the piece, its placement, and your skin. This guide covers the fundamentals so you know what to expect.

Why aftercare matters

A new tattoo is an open wound. Proper aftercare protects the ink while your skin heals, prevents infection, and keeps colors from fading or blowing out. Poor aftercare is the most common reason a beautiful tattoo ends up patchy or needing a touch-up.

The first 24–48 hours

  • Leave the bandage on for the length of time your artist tells you — this varies depending on whether you were wrapped in traditional film or a second-skin adhesive bandage.
  • Wash gently with clean hands, lukewarm water, and a fragrance-free soap. Pat dry with a clean paper towel — never rub.
  • Apply a thin layer of the ointment or lotion your artist recommends. More is not better; the skin needs to breathe.

Week one to two: healing

  • Wash your tattoo 2–3 times a day and moisturize lightly to keep it from drying out.
  • Do not pick or scratch. Your tattoo will scab and flake — this is normal. Let it fall off on its own.
  • Avoid soaking: no pools, hot tubs, baths, or the ocean until fully healed. Quick showers are fine.
  • Stay out of the sun. UV exposure fades fresh ink fast. Keep it covered, and once healed, always use sunscreen to protect your tattoo for life.
  • Skip heavy sweating and the gym for a few days if the area will be irritated.

Signs to watch for

Some redness, swelling, and warmth in the first few days is normal. Contact us or a doctor if you notice spreading redness, pus, a fever, or pain that gets worse instead of better — these can be signs of infection.

Free touch-ups

We stand behind our work. Modified Tattoo Gallery offers a free touch-up within the first two months of your tattoo. If you feel a spot needs attention after it heals, reach out to your artist to set it up.
